Terry
Tully, piper, composer, arranger, legend.
Terry is Ireland’s most successful piper, having lead St Laurence O’Toole Grade 1 Pipe band for 26 years, culminating in their best ever season in 2009, breaking the big 3 monopoly of top places by getting 3rd. 2008 was also an important year for SLOT, when the band won its first grade one major at Dumbarton and followed that up with a second win at Birmingham. The Band won Champion of Champions that year too.
Terry’s distinctive style and arrangements are captured in his playing and in his 3 collections of Irish Tunes, old and new. Tully's books contain many settings of once obscure Irish tunes heard regularly nowadays, due to the popularity of these books, as well as his own compositions, including the classic Ass in the Graveyard and Pumpkin's Fancy.
The Irish Pipe Band Association credit Tully not only for the achievements of their premier pipe band , St. Laurence O'Toole's of Dublin, but also for bringing solo piping standards in Ireland to new heights . A successful soloist and recitalist, this is his first ever trip to entertain London piping aficionados.
The SPSL are delighted to be holding a Q & A session with Terry followed by a recital. Questions will be taken from the floor and if you wish you can email any in advance to Alasdair Smith. Terry’s distinctive view and take on the piping world from the Emerald Isle will be a great starter to the main course of tunes with no doubt an emphasis on the Irish tradition which he has done so much to represent so distinctively and creatively.
The
questions will be asked by John Angus Smith, President of the Competing
piper’s
Association. The evening will start at 7.30. p.m. In the meantime,
please enjoy the video below of Terry, where he shows exactly why he is
a household name to many pipers.
