2009 London Competition

Due to the large entry in 2008 and the changes to 2009 CPA grades, it was agreed by the committee that the grading criteria for the 2009 competition should be examined. Following lengthy discussion the committee agreed that the criteria and grading for competitions in 2009 is as follows: 

PIOBAIREACHD COMPETITIONS 

1.Bratach Gorm – for former winners of the William Gillies Memorial Challenge Cup or Gold Medal contests at the Northern Meeting and Argyllshire Gathering. (Submit seven tunes) 

2.William Gillies Memorial Challenge Cup – for those; eligible to compete in the Bratach Gorm; selected to compete in Gold Medal contests at the Northern Meeting or Argyllshire Gathering 2009; CPA Grade A; or winner of Silver Medal contests at the Northern Meeting or Argyllshire Gathering in 2009. (Submit six tunes)

3.R.G. Lawrie Rams Horn Snuff Mull – for those eligible to compete in the William Gillies Memorial Challenge Cup excluding those eligible to compete in the Bratach Gorm (To be run concurrently with the above competition, 5 prizes awarded in each. Winner of Snuff Mull will continue to qualify for Gillies. Same tunes to be submitted as above) 

4.John Roe Plate – for those selected to compete in the Silver Medal contests at the Northern Meeting or Argylshire Gathering in 2009 or CPA Grade B. (Submit four tunes)

5. The National Piping Centre Piobaireachd Trophy: Open to those not eligible to compete in the above piobaireachd competitions or CPA Grade C. (Submit 3 tunes)

MARCH, STRATHSPEY & REEL COMPETITIONS

6. London Medallion and John MacFadyen Quaich – for those eligible to compete in the former winners March, Strathspey and Reel events at the Northern Meeting and Argyllshire Gathering or former winners of the Strachan Memorial Trophy. (Submit six of each 2/4 marches, strathspeys and reels. Two of each to be chosen and played once through)

7. J.B. Robertson Silver Rose Bowl - for those eligible for the London Medallion and John MacFadyen Quaich. (To be run concurrently with above competition, same Marches to be submitted as above)

8. The Strachan Memorial Trophy – for those: selected to compete in Grade “A” MSR at Northern Meeting 2009; “A” M and S&R at the Argyllshire Gathering 2009; CPA Grade A; winner of B MSR Northern Meeting 2009; or M or S&R Argyllshire Gathering 2009. (Submit four 2/4 marches, four strathspeys and four reels. One of each to be chosen) 

9. The London Scottish Hodden Grey - for those: selected to compete in Grade “B” MSR at Northern Meeting 2009; “B” M and S&R at the Argyllshire Gathering 2009; or CPA Grade B. (Submit three 2/4 marches, three strathspeys and three reels. One of each to be chosen) 

10. New MSR Competition: Open to those not eligible to compete in the above March, Strathspey and Reel competitions or CPA Grade C. (Submit three 2/4 marches, three strathspeys and three reels. One of each to be chosen)

HORNPIPE & JIGS COMPETITIONS

11.The Mary Flora Beaton Cup - for all who are competing this year in the London Medallion and John MacFadyen Quaich. (Submit three hornpipes and three jigs. One of each to be chosen) 

12.The Donald Forbes Medal - for all who are competing this year in the Strachan Memorial Trophy. (Submit two hornpipes and two jigs. One of each to be chosen) 

13.The Hugh MacMillan Trophy - for all who are competing this year in event 9. (Submit two hornpipes and two jigs) 

14. New Hornpipe and Jig Competition - open to those not eligible to compete in the above Hornpipe and Jig competitions or CPA Grade C. (Own choice of tune submit on day) 

The Champion Piper will be the piper gaining most points in events 1, 2, 6, 7 & 11. 

The Angus Nicol Award will be awarded to the piper gaining most points in events 4, 9, and 13.

Where five prizes are awarded for the event, eg, the Bratach Gorm or the Gillies, first place counts as 5 points, second place 4 points, third 3, fourth 2 and fifth 1 point. 

In events with 3 prizes, eg, Mary Flora Beaton Cup, for the first place 3 points will be awarded, and so on.In the case of a tie, precedence will be given to the winner of higher prizes for ceol mor.

All Amateur competitions will be run as part of the CLASP league. As with last year, all amateur entries must be submitted via the CLASP organisation, but competitors will be required to register on arrival and be given badges at the SPSL registration desk.
