About the SPSL

Pic 1

The SPSL was established in 1932 as a charity to promote the Great Highland Bagpipe in the London region. Since then, we've come on in leaps and bounds and now run one of the UK's top bagpipe competitions  The Bratach Gorm. We also hold regular classes and recitals for those with a passion for piping. Please take your time looking through our site, as well as the latest SPSL news, you'll find much more to interest you, including articles, photos and sound files.

Why should I join the SPSL?

We believe that piping is something that can be immensely rewarding, both to play and to hear, and that the best way to do so is in the company of other pipers. If you are a London based piper, or are learning, or just have an interest in piping, for a mere £20 a year we can offer a monthly gathering/recital, tuition, advice on bagpipe set up, the chance to enter our annual Member's Comp and to be part of the Bratach Gorm, the London event. Past recitals for member's have included performer's such as Gordon Duncan, Robert Wallace, Willie McCallum, Gavin Stoddart, Chris Armstrong, and Jim McGillivary.

Joining the SPSL has never been easier!

Summer Break

This year's Member's Comp, Gordon Walker Recital, Manawatu Scottish night and the Harpenden Highland Gathering have all flown by, and the SPSL are taking a break from public activities for a month, to let our members get stuck in at the height of the competition season.

The SPSL committee will still be working away throughout the summer though, organising the London Comp for November, including the booking of flights, hotel rooms, catering, etc. etc.

If you would like to volunteer to be a Steward for the London Comp on the 1st November, please let our secretary Jackie know. It really is a great way to help the society out, and you will also have the opportunity to meet some of the worlds greatest pipers.

We are also going to be hosting trade stalls at the comp, and I am delighted to say that one of our guests, the David Naill company, are donating a set of their DN3 pipes with their aged art ivory to the SPSL. These pipes will look like a classic set from the past, but will have that prize winning Naill sound. We will be holding a raffle to win these prestigious set at the London comp, more details later!

Don't forget to have a look at our new SPSL Blog for fast news, updates, but mostly just blether.
